I train men and women, teenage boys, and teenage girls. I train senior citizens, and high caliber athletes. Tonight I have to train an 11-year-old boy for speed development, and tomorrow an obese man. The interesting part of training such diverse clientele is that most of them all have the same basic training structure. Whether my client is a 15 year-old girl who is training for basketball, or a 30-some-year old female trying to lose weight as part of her New Year’s resolution, all of them train with weights. None of them complains really about weight training except for one part of the population…the young and middle-aged women!
The number one thing I hear from females regarding workouts when I introduce them to strength training (especially when it involves weight lifting): “I don’t want to get bulky!”“I don’t mind working out, but weights make me look big, and I only want to lose weight and tone up.” Girls…if you are reading this, get this through your thick skulls(and thighs) for the final time—WEIGHT LIFTING WILL NOT MAKE YOU BULKY. Your diet is what makes you bulky. Too many Manhattans and cheese fries at your Friday evening happy hours will make you bulky. Sneaking late night spoonfuls of breyers ice cream, or squirting gobs of magic shell in your mouth, is what makes you bulky. Stop blaming exercise for the fact that you arms and legs are bigger than most pro wrestlers!
The next thing out of that same woman’s mouth is usually, “I want to lose weight and all of this fat that I gained, just tell me what to do and I will do it…I swear!” OK, here it goes again, one last time…GET YOURSELF ON A GOOD WEIGHT/STRENGTH TRAINING ROUTINE. Yea, I said it again. Lifting weights is the best way for you to lose weight. Weights will help you build muscle and muscle in turn will increase your metabolism, which in turn will help you burn fat all day long, even when you are sitting on that big, fat butt that you are trying to get rid of in the first place.
Did you make some resolutions last week? Wanting to start over for the New Year? This is your chance and things will be different this year, right? Yea…Heard it all before. The real difference maker for you this year will need to be a change in your training routine. Get off the Elliptical machine and get your butt in the squat rack. Make sure you have dumbbells in your hands for most of your workout. If you are not ready for dumbbells, that’s fine too. Use you body weight. Chances are it will be enough in the beginning. No matter what you do, make sure it involves a long term, strength or resistance training plan that you do at least two times per week.
Don’t know how to get started? Hire a trainer. Do your homework, invest some of that money that you usually spend buying drinks at the nightclubs each weekend in a good personal trainer and get to work.
Remember, if you want that great looking ass, or really want those shapely legs with some great muscle tone, and really want to shape up those arms (get rid of “teacher’s arm”…if you don’t know what that is, look here : http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=teacher+arms ) Then get on the weights, and get where you want to be!!!
