AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! - THIS IS GOSPEL!!
Make fitness a way of life and strap in for the long haul. Even if you reach your goals, set new ones and keep going. If you don’t, you may wind up where you started faster than you think.

I LOVE HIIT! Its short, sweet with all the benefits!
I do my strength training workouts and immediately follow with 10-15 minutes of HIIT and I am good to go!

I have just recently started out as a personal trainer and already am seeing the " excuses". People beg me to help them and then don't follow what I tell them to do and get frustrated because they are not seeing results.
That is so true about the 23 hours that I am NOT working out, I have to make sure I am putting the right foods into my body and getting enough rest and just plain taking care of myself. Without that, there is no way I would be where I am at today...and its definitely a commitment I am willing to make!

After reading the post it made me search back through time and think about what caused me to start playing sports. Although it started out playing in soccer leagues because of my friends. But I've always been active in some form, and even today at 20 years old out of high school. I still remain active in competition and recreational paintball.

I love your rants. Since I go to a small, women's only gym (not a Curves) I don't have this issue much... but every now and then I have to wait for a treadmill or elliptical... there is a gym regular that hogs the treadmill for about 45 minutes at a time; she walks on the treadmill while watching trash tv and drinking Gatorade, all at a grueling 3.5 mph speed. Then there is cell phone girl, who likes to hop on the elliptical and talk on the phone at the same time. It is so frustrating! Makes me wonder why they even bother.

Amen. I watch trainers at my gym all the time put people on those things, and in almost every case, the person can't do the movement correctly. I always think, why not see if your client can do a bodyweight squat on the ground before introducing the bosu. But the trainers must think it makes them look cool and cutting-edge.

Excellent post. I went through a phase of weighing myself on the scales at my gym before each workout (4-5 times a week). Some days the weight was down, some days the weight was back up. I really lost a lot of motivation on the days when I 'gained' a couple of pounds. Thankfully I 'saw the light' and have stopped weighing myself. It is nice to see that I am not crazy for doing this :)

Keep up the excellent posts :)

Your point about being active is SPOT ON.

I was recently moved into a new building at work, on the fourth floor. I make it a point to NEVER use the elevator. In fact, even when carrying a heavy box or tray full of food, I still TAKE THE STAIRS.

Yet, I amazed at how many people (especially many overweight folks) take the elevator to the second floor! It blows my mind.

I probably get in 15-20 flights of stairs a day....just going about my business. This is on top of my workout. Over the course of a month, we're talking about 300-400 flights of stairs! This is like climbing the Empire State Building several times per month!

On top of it...it is faster than the elevator :)

Nice blog...I am subscribing to your feed!

This is a great blog post! You are absolutely right about clients who succeed. Yes, we can do a better job preparing our clients for success. However, the "new look" is a great marketing billboard for your services. Thanks for the blog post! It got me thinking about a whole new aspect, and responsibility of a professional fitness trainer.

:: Applauds :: Keith, I loved this post because everything in it is 100% true. Personally, I'd rather spend my hard-earned money to be in stellar health and LOOK it, too, versus putting that money into cosmetics, clothing or beauty treatments in an attempt to disguise physical shortcomings or flaws. The more fit you are, the less camouflage you need.

I am not a trainer but I do hear a lot of these same arguments from people that I work with. It is sad that people will spend their money on things that have no lasting effect. I had rather be able to enjoy my "golden years" than hate life when I get there. Just wanted to say this was spot on with what I see everyday.

Excellent post! I have found intervals to work quite well (I started doing them regularly about 6 weeks ago), but have always wondered why. Not anymore!

On a slightly related note; is it worthwhile doing just 5 minutes of intervals (say 3-5 cycles) at the end of a 50 minute weight lifting session?

Thanks, and keep up the excellent blogging.
Dave.

It takes a while. You need to keep doing it, but make sure there is not more of a problem too. Give it a few more weeks and try some static stretching of the hamstrings as well

Great information Keith!

I think the most important thing you said was "Learning about all this stuff is NOT easy and that you are continually learning everyday."

I agree. The best trainers are always looking at what they do, evaluating whether or not they can do something better and staying on top of advancing their knowledge for their clients sake.

You definately make some very good points in these rants. I agree with most of them, but in particular - I go to the gym and see "trainers" working with people when they look like they aren't doing anything for their own fitness. I just shake my head.

Great points Keith.... our volleyball and basketball athletes feel naked when I make them do activity without tape or braces. 90% of these athletes have never even had an ankle injury yet they are force-fed the notion that they must be taped/braced at all times. We get in our sand pit at least once a week to do just that.....get their bodies used to feeling what it's like to work when not in a cast. Everybody who works with these types of athlete should follow suit so that the ankle proprioceptors are at least allowed to do their jobs once in a while.

I read your post, and just wanted to say this should have been read by so many media companies nowadays. You describe the urge to argument, without any proper reference or even knowledge about a topic. It kind of relates my thoughts to the media as they love to write about anything almost, with no or minimum of knowledge, claiming they know it all. Once you try to open up a discussion.. voila: there's an argument. Annoying that is. Good post, keep it up.

Hi Keith,

My name is Brett Rodgers, I am an open space management consultant in Australia having previously worked as a Municipal Parks and Sportsfields Manager.

Currently, in Australia and in particular Sydney, we are experiencing extended drought conditions and water restrictions. This is resulting in deteriorating conditions of natural grass playing fields and increasing risk for organised sports users, particulalry ground hardness. It seems obvious to me that we (in Australia) need to explore options regarding installation and use of artificial playing fields. Firstly as a way of increasing sustainability in a climate of reduced water use and secondly as a means of meeting the required carrying capacity whilst providing the required quality of playing field to ensure player safety and enjoyment.

I am currently investigating opportunities to further advocate the use of this type of facility and having had considerable experience in managing natural grass systems I concur with your comments that there is a growing problem arising from a lack of experienced turf managers capable of administering facilities with economic and environmental pressures such as reduced budgets and water availability. I am also pleased to see your support of such systems from a sports medicine practioner perspective.

As we in Australia have considerable reluctance to embrace the take up of such facilities I am currently researching factors influencing the acceptance of synthetic systems overseas to identify opportunities for increased acceptance in Australia. As I am at the intitial stages of my research your artical has provided a positive insight from a sports medicine practitioner's perspective.

Thank you for the article.

Kind regards,

Absolutely,

I've been taking Nexgen Ceutical's concetrate Omega 3 for about 6 months and I've noticed an improvement in several aspects of my life. I've got more energy, less aches, improved attitude and I do contribute it to the fish oil. Like CJ, I was not aware of all the benefits. Doctors should start recommending this instead of all the other prescription medications.

I loved this article. I am 44 and have a 7-yr old boy and a 9-yr old girl. My son plays soccer, has swam and played T-ball. My daughter has played soccer and danced but is now into softball and swimming.

They love to watch t.v., however. As a kid I watched some tv but mostly played outside I think. If you have any more ideas for me to have my kids do, please let me know if you can. Much appreciated.

Sincerely, Bas

Hi there:
thanx for the informative and very factual article. I know for a fact that interval training promotes a healthier and shaplier body. I use this type of training wiht my clients (I'm a Personal Trainer just for clarification). Although I implment high intensity cardio (30-45 seconds) within the workout, I have my clients perform weight training exercises in between, as well. Basically, for about 2 minutes they do a weight resistance exercise followed by high intensity cario burst. The reason why I encourage weights in the workout is to increase muscle mass as well as the clients' metabolic rate. Pretty much all of my clients have noticed a significant difference in their appearance as well as their energy. It makes both them and I feel great about the workout.

Keith,
Great article! I might add that Glutamine also is very important. I was not aware of the benefits of fish oil, but will try it after reading your article. I strongly suggest creatine for people who are getting older, as it helps them to maintain their muscle mass, and there has not been any negative issues with it. I will be reading your blog and suggesting it to others.

"So what kind of resistance training would you combine this with?"

Any kind really. Weights, body weight work, bands, etc.. doesnt matter really. As long as there is a progressive resistance over time, you will be fine. Personally, I see more results with people and myself from heavy free weights.

About a year ago, I started training with HIIT. When I first heard about it I was completely skeptical. I thought..."how on earth can I get a good cardio workout in 15 minutes?" I figured that there was no way to burn fat in that little time. After all, isn't cardio supposed to be long and boring? I decided to give it a try anyway. After a few weeks of doing it, I could see the fat starting to melt away. As well, I felt my internal body temperature kick up a few notches, a sign that my ultra-slow metabolism was speeding up. What I found, was that nothing else gave me the types of results I found with HIIT. Yes, it is extremely hard...but it's over in 15 minutes. And I always felt as though I got a much better workout with HIIT. And, it never gets too easy or boring, because you can always make your intervals longer.

Great article! I highly recommend trying it!
